Searches by "domain:"
[BACK] [HOME] [NEXT]

AltaVista in both simple and advanced search engines allows for the search of a "domain" (always lower case with AltaVista) that appear in URLs to search individual countries throughout the world. A typical advanced search would have the word/phrase in the search box to rank the results and the "domain" in the Boolean expression box.

For example, a search for "Christianity" in the Fiji Islands would be entered as follows: Enter "christianity" in the search box to rank the results and "domain:fi" in the Boolean expression box. From the list below, "fi" represents "Fiji". Click on AltaVisa Advance Search to see the results of 714. A very good place to start if one is planning a missionary trip to the Fiji islands.

An interesting domain, not used very much is "us", which stands for the United States, but allows for the fifty individual states to be separated by domain using the two letters assigned by the U.S Postal Service for the 50 states. Click on AltaVisa Advance Search to see the results. At present 2,931,178 web pages exist within the "us" domain. However, at present AltaVista has no means to search by states within the "us" domain.

Most web searchers are familiar with the following domain names used by the United States. More domain names are planned in the distant future.

  • com US Commercial
  • edu US Educational
  • gov US Government
  • int International
  • mil US Military
  • nato Nato field

Changes in the domain list

The program getstats uses a text file with a list of domain names, e.g. saying that .uk stands for 'United Kingdom'. The original list copied from the getstats.12.c site was not entirely up-to-date: some domains were missing. This has led to several changes and notes listed below.

All these changes led to the current domain list. 18 June 1997

1.Changes in the spelling of some countries already in the list, including adding the proper accents.

  • bd Banglades --> Bangladesh
  • ci Ivory Coast --> Côte d'Ivoire
  • kg Kirgistan --> Kyrgyzstan
  • pg Papua New --> Papua New Guinea
  • pn Pitcairn --> Pitcairn Islands
  • re Reunion (French) --> Réunion (French)
  • sk Slovak Republic --> Slovakia
  • sn Senegal --> Sénégal
  • st Saint Tome and Principe --> São Tomé e Príncipe
  • ws Samoa --> Western Samoa
  • zr Zaire --> Congo (ex-Zaïre)
  • and gf, gm, gn and pr were put in the proper alphabetic order.

2.Domain names added to the list:

  • er Eritrea
  • gg Bailiwick of Guernsey
  • gs South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands
  • im Isle of Man
  • je Bailiwick of Jersey
  • mk Macedonia (Former Yugoslav Republic)
  • yt Mayotte
These domain names were found on the Global Web Explorer, a site which has links to all countries in the world.

Note:

    The country name for gs -- South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands -- appeared to be 1 character too long for getstats, which has been solved by changing the getstats program source code; see patch.domain

The following changes have not been made:

    • kp North Korea --> Korea, Democratic People's Republic of
    • kr South Korea --> Korea, Republic of
    • tj Tadjikistan --> Tajikistan
    • vn Vietnam --> Viet Nam
    because they don't seem to be necessary.

4.Outstanding problems:

    To which countries refer the domain names db and fsu, and what country has a domain number (85) in stead of a domain name? The domain name kn is listed as being St Christopher & Nevis on the Global Web Explorer, but as Saint Kitts Nevis Anguilla in the original domain list; the latter name is still used until we know which is the right name.

5.Notes:

    um is listed as "US Minor Outlying Islands", which are according to the Global Web Explorer: Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Islands, Navassa Island, Wake Island
